Grand Confort LC2 Sofa
The grand confort was designed to meet the requirement of the Corbusier’s seating type no 3, the semi-reclining chair for women. In response to Le Corbusier’s ideas, Perriand developed what she called a panier a coussins in two sizes: small and large, as well as a wider sofa version
By inverting the standard design of club chairs-internal skeleton surrounded by padding-Perriand achieved a modernist form in keeping with the architecture for which it was intended. Unfortunately, the tight corner radii for the tube-bending machines of the day, which meant that the frame had to be fabricated out of cast corner pieces joined to straight tubes, a time-consuming and expensive process that preluded mass production. Perriand also had a second version made with longer front legs to improve the seating angle, and another, as an alternative, with sprung rear legs, which allowed the chair to angle backwards and downwards when occupied.
The modern version of LC2, shown here and overleaf, differs in a number of respects from the historical LC3. The cushions are now more geometrical, filled with polyurethane foam held in fabric, which softened the contours. In addition, the frame is chromed, not lacquered in such colours as chestnut brown, blue, grey and pale green. For the leather cushions of the originals. Perriand selected English leather in various shapes, incuding biscuit, wallflower, marine blue and meadow green. A less expensive version in coloured canvas or a combination of leather and canvas was aslo envisaged.
